EU support for the Improvement of Bicycle Tourism in Latvia – Lithuania Border Region

Palanga Town Municipality Administration (Lithuania), together with partners – Klaipeda Region Municipality (Lithuania), Nica Municipality (Latvia) and Rucava Municipality (Latvia), is implementing the project “Improvement of Active Tourism in Border Region” (LLI-037) financed under Latvia–Lithuania Cross Border Cooperation Programme 2007–2013. Project objective is the improvement of bicycle tourism in Lithuania-Latvia border region.
The project focuses on socio-economic development of Baltic Sea Border Region of Lithuania and Latvia improving accessibility of active tourism infrastructure: logistics and visitor places (long and short term stop/resting places, and visitor centres). The development will be backed up by a feasibility study for further construction of bicycle route up into Latvian territory with recommendations for implementation as well as developing a joint marketing activity via development of marketing tools for promotion of the new tourism route. The trainings foreseen in the project will allow to build the same understanding about the goals of the region developing bicycle tourism, share good practice, gain same perspective on bicycle route design, marketing and operations. This will create preconditions for effective plan and operations tourism resources cross border.

Project implementation date is the 1st March, 2009 - 28th February, 2011. Total project budget – 1.413.603,88 EUR, ERDF funding – 1.201.563,30 EUR.
In the next future will be organized workshop “Development Opportunities of Bicycle Tourism Infrastructure in Lithuania – Latvia Border Region” in Palanga town (Lithuania) for architects, territory planning and tourism development specialists from municipalities. Reconstruction of bicycle route central Palanga-Sventoji works in Lithuania has already started. It is planned to carry out reconstruction to meet EUROVELO requirement and join this segment to already existing Klaipeda-Palanga EUROVELO 10.
